Heat-blocking Shutters And More Ways To Beat The Summer Heat

July 17, 2017

Summer’s just around the corner. While many people were longing for summer weather way back in January, some might not be ready for the summer heat.

But don’t sweat it, Sunburst has a few tips to help you beat the heat when the temperatures start getting high, from heat-blocking interior shutters to ways to reduce the strain on your AC unit.

Plantation Shutters Block Summer Heat

The way most of that sweltering summer heat comes inside your home is through your windows. By installing a window treatment designed for energy efficiency, like plantation shutters, you can greatly reduce the ambient temperature in your home this summer.

The numbers don’t lie: Polywood® faux wood plantation shutters are proven to block up to 45% of the heat energy that normally passes through windows. In some cases, that can mean up to a 30-degree temperature difference! Keep the shutters closed during the daytime to block the sunlight and heat, then open them at night to allow for the cooler airflow to permeate through your house.

Remember, that heat-blocking ability isn’t just good during summer. If you’re having a similar conversation about how to beat the cold once winter gets close, plantation shutters might be your perfect solution.

Up Your Home’s Energy Efficiency

Great window insulators like shutters can improve your energy efficiency, but it doesn’t stop there. By doing any or all of the following smaller jobs, you can help decrease your home’s energy waste, which contributes to higher temperatures inside:

  • Make sure all your air conditioning ducts are sealed and insulated properly. In addition, replace your air filter every 4-6 weeks to keep your system in top performing shape.
  • Switch away from inefficient incandescent light bulbs. With LED bulbs or CFL lamps, you can reduce the heat given off by your light bulbs without sacrificing brightness.
  • If some of your appliances are a little older, consider replacing them with newer, more efficient versions. Some appliances like your oven, water heater, and furnace contribute to a good chunk of the heat your home generates.

Other Ways To Stay Cool During The Summer

Though these smaller projects may not drastically improve energy efficiency in your home, they’re still effective ways to stay cool when the mercury rises:

  • Make sure your ceiling fans are running counter-clockwise, so they move cold air downward. If your fans are spinning clockwise, there’s likely a small switch on the fan itself that alternates the direction.
  • Think about using a dehumidifier, especially in the room or two you spend the most time in during the day. Less humidity in the air makes it easier for your AC system to cool your home, and dryer air usually feels cooler on the skin.
  • If you have a lot of south-facing windows that don’t have shutters on them, think about putting up a canopy or awning to block the ever-present summer sun from beating down on them.
