Sunburst Shutters San Diego FAQs

It depends on how you want shutters to complement your interior design. Do you prefer a window treatment that offers lifetime durability and beauty that can perfectly color contrast against your wall paint? Then Polywood® plantation shutters are the ideal interior shutter option. Are you looking to match the traditional wood craftsmanship inside your home as closely as possible? If so, Ovation wood shutters are the answer. Sunburst Shutters has a variety of shutters to fit every decorating style, window type, and budget.

Window treatments offer a variety of energy efficiency, depending on the material, the thickness, the amount of the window they cover, and more. But the window treatments that offer the most power in maximizing energy efficiency are plantation shutters, especially our exclusively patented Polywood® shutters. Polywood® was specifically engineered to provide optimal insulation through features exclusive to Sunburst Shutters. Click here to learn more about the many benefits the Polywood® Shutter Insulation System has to offer your home and bank account.

Yes, even though plantation shutters are best known for providing you privacy at best, given each shutter is installed with a decorative frame, leaving little room for those less desirable side-space gaps that come with most other traditional window treatments, there are multiple ways you can leverage natural light;

 • Shutter louvers and panels can be opened or closed to manage light. For just a little light, tilt the louvers open slightly. For complete light, tile the louvers open at a 45-degree angle. For complete light and view, swing the panels open too.
 • To get the best of both worlds, go with a divider rail option. The result is a shutter that can control light from the top louvers (opening them) and yet keep the bottom louvers closed for privacy.

An inappropriately installed window treatment can be tough to open and damage easily. We have a professional installation crew that comes to your home and installs your window treatment with great accuracy, making sure that each one moves smoothly—and doesn’t get damaged in the process.

Shutter frames are permanently affixed to the window opening to provide stability. Shutter panels are hinged into the frame, so they swing open if needed. Before we install your shutters, we bring samples to your home during our free in-home design consultation so you can pick the best frames and shutters for you.

You can easily have shutters in a pop-out window. Our shutter frame can be flush with the window opening or on the wall around it—allowing room for the shutters to completely swing open.

There isn’t a window type we can’t handle, especially tilt-in windows. We can install shutters in a tilt-in window. We’ll provide a frame that fits around the outside of the window opening to leave enough room for the window to tilt in freely without hitting the shutters.

Window treatment options on sliding doors or French doors can be tricky. But shutters are typically the ideal solution, especially in achieving style consistency throughout your entire home. They are optimal in functionality offering maximum privacy, energy efficiency, light, and sound control. Shutters are permanent and more durable than any other treatment on doors that are opened and closed regularly.

Your plantation shutter slats – or louvers – can be moved simply by adjusting them up or down. Most commonly, a tilt rod mounted on the front of the shutters allows you to adjust the louvers by moving the tilt rod. If you would like to move the louvers without a visible tilt rod on the shutters, we suggest shutters with hidden/rear-mounted tilt rods. This gives your shutters a clean and contemporary look.

Our Polywood® shutters last over 50 years – more than any other shutter you can find. That’s why these plantation shutters are a permanent fixture that adds to your home’s resale value. Learn more about the durability of our shutters.

Plantation shutters are a piece of cake to clean because they have large louvers and their tilt bars are either hidden or mounted on the rear. Simply tilt them open and dust them like furniture – or wipe smudges with a moist cloth.

If you bought shutters from Sunburst, give your local store a call about your broken shutter. We’ll send out a tech to analyze the problem and provide solutions for you. Our most common shutter issue is the family dog chewing on louvers—something we can easily fix for you.

Plantation shutters are custom fashioned to fit your windows perfectly. They become a permanent fixture of your home, boosting its resale value. These shutters cannot be moved from one house to another.

Plantation shutters are an investment that allows temperature control, energy efficiency, and privacy. They are custom fashioned and installed on your windows to become permanent fixtures. Not only are they exquisite and energy saving, but plantation shutters also boost the value of your residence. When you invest in Sunburst Shutters for your home, you invest wisely.

The only way to truly give you an accurate cost for your shutters is by one of our Sunburst reps coming to your home and taking accurate measurements of your windows. This is a free service as part of your in-home design consultation.

Many factors influence cost—from the type of shutter to the size of the window, to the frame, and more. Even if you have windows in a difficult-to-reach area of your house or with a unique shape, our shutter experts can get you a precise measurement so that the shutters you get will perfectly match up with your windows.

Easy! Call us 877-786-2877 or fill out the form below to schedule your free in-home consultation, and we’ll guide you from there. If we service your market, we come out to your home to measure the windows you want to cover with shutters and bring samples of all our shutter products and their available options. This way we can provide you with the most accurate shutter price for your project. Schedule your in-home consultation today!

We take pride in not only helping you select a window treatment that best suits your home but one that will also provide you with longevity & durability. We go above and beyond to make sure your windows are accurately measured for precise customized fabrication and turnkey install, avoiding the potential and costly hiccups that traditionally occur with ordering window treatments online.

If you’re an experienced handyperson, you’re probably familiar with some of the processes involved in a shutter installation. However, installing shutters yourself can be a tad complicated for most homeowners. Our recommendation is to leave the installation to our certified and insured professionals, that way you won’t risk damage to your shutters, your windows, or any other part of your home.

Yes! There’s no reason to remove or do work on your old window trim when installing new plantation shutters. Our natural Ovation™ wood shutters and patented Polywood® shutters can be customized with a variety of frame styles to fit easily into your existing window trim. If your windows are trim-less, we offer frame styles to install directly onto the drywall around your window to secure your gorgeous new shutters to your window opening.

Your shutter sales rep will measure each of your house’s windows during your complimentary design consultation to make sure that your new shutters will fit perfectly with your current window trim.

The main difference between painted and stained shutters is the way the shutter material interacts with the color. Paint lays on top of the shutter, covering the surface. Conversely, stains penetrate the shutter, becoming a part of the natural wood or our Polywood® material. Our Polywood® shutters come in 3 shades of white with a baked-on paint finish, which is key in preserving their vibrancy for a lifetime, as they will not crack, chip or warp.

Both methods come with their individual benefits. There are typically more color options for painted shutters. With stained shutters, the color doesn’t obscure the natural wood grain, so you’re able to see the natural grooves and ridges of the material without it being hidden by a layer of paint.

During your in-home window design consultation, our team will bring samples of our stain and paint options, so you can perfectly color match with your existing interior design.

The entire plantation shutter process, beginning with your initial consultation through finishing your shutter installation, usually takes around four to six weeks.

Why this long? Our number one goal is to build the perfect shutters for your windows. Doing that requires us to take exact measurements, make use of advanced software to design your shutters, assemble your brand-new shutters manually, and carefully ship them to you prior to installation. Real wood shutters typically take longer due to the staining and finishing process. In efforts to achieve perfection, it’s worth the wait.

The term “poly shutter” is used for any non-wood shutter. Poly shutters can be made in a number of ways, but none of which have the features and benefits of Sunburst’s Polywood Shutter. Polywood Shutters are exclusive to Sunburst Shutters & Window Fashions. We designed and created them with features unlike any other shutter.

Polywood has unique weather stripping for energy efficiency and extra light control, a patented baked-on paint finish that lasts longer than any other shutter, and a number of other features no other shutter offers.

Some companies try to capitalize on the popularity of Sunburst’s Polywood Shutter by calling their poly shutter “Polywood.” But beware that Polywood is only available through Sunburst Shutters stores and authorized dealers.

Use your zip code and find the location nearest you or call 877-786-2877 to find a showroom near you.

Sunburst Shutters offers a start to finish in-home shopping experience. We send a representative to your home to measure all your windows, discuss your options, and give you a quote. The shutter consultation is totally free. That’s the best way to start a window treatment project. If you’re only looking for a simple estimate, you can give us the measurements of your windows either by phone or through our contact form.

Whether or not to remove the trim depends on your own taste. If you want to keep your existing trim, we can build your shutters to complement your current trim. If you like our shutter frames better, then you can take out the existing trim—but it’s not a requirement. If you’re trying to go trim-less or replace your trim, your Sunburst installer can help you find the best option to fit the vision you have in mind for your windows.

For the most part, the larger the window, the more shutter panels you’ll want. Our recommendation is to use one panel for windows up to 26 inches wide, two panels for windows up to 50 inches wide, and four for windows up to 98 inches wide.

Single wide panels are not as room-friendly as multiple panels. Sometimes, wider panels won’t fit flush against the wall because of their width. Two smaller panels resolve that.

For any windows that you’ll open or shut often, you’re usually better off with multi-panel shutters, since they’re easier to open and have additional support from the frame when you do operate them.

Polywood shutters are some of the safest window treatments. The cord-free, durable construction is safe for children and pets. The non-toxic and hypoallergenic paint and finishes will never chip or peel. And since Polywood is moisture and pest resistant, you will not have to worry about mold, termites, or wood rot.

With so many window treatments to choose from, it’s important to know what makes each one different. Our custom plantation shutters have many incredible features that add value to your home and a certain WOW!-factor.

The first thing you notice about interior plantation shutters? A stunning appearance. Their straight lines and symmetry are universally appealing, adding unique depth and texture to rooms otherwise full of soft furnishings. Plantation shutters become a permanent part of the room’s architecture and look equally traditional and modern.

Sturdy wood and Polywood plantation shutters last longer than even the best-quality shades and blinds. They don’t tear, bend, or break. Polywood plantation shutters are particularly durable, resisting damage from moisture, extreme temperatures, pests, and UV rays. And they’re effortless to clean. Just dust or wipe with a damp cloth to remove dirt and residues. Polywood custom plantation shutters don’t stain, yellow, or grow mold and will look pristine for decades.

Louvered plantation shutters give you more control over privacy and natural light than other window treatments. Just adjust the louvers to find the perfect balance between privacy and light control. Unlike window treatments that loosely hang down from a bar, your custom interior shutter frame is installed around the window and prevents any gaps at the edges where people can see in or light shines through.

The excellent craftsmanship of our indoor plantation shutters also makes them more energy-efficient than all other window treatments. They block outside air that can alter your home’s interior temperature. Insulating Polywood plantation shutters can prevent up to 30 degrees of temperature transfer from your windows and help lower energy bills.

Your custom plantation shutter project begins with a complimentary in-home consultation. One of our Sunburst Shutters experts brings product samples to your home and demonstrates how they will look and work on your windows. After you make your selection, we take exact measurements of your window and make your interior shutters right here in the USA using the fine craftsmanship and materials we’re known for. Finally, we expertly install your plantation shutters with careful precision to ensure they look and work correctly. At every step of the way, our Sunburst Shutters team is here to answer all your questions.

Homeowners love how easy our interior louvered window shutters are to use. Each custom plantation shutter covers the entire window — frames and all — and is considered a permanent fixture to the house. To open the plantation shutters, gently pull the panels toward you and to the sides. To close, just swing the panels back into the frame.

However, most people open and close the louvers to direct outside light. Just move the tilt rod up or down to adjust the louvers. If you have a hidden tilt rod, tip one of the louvers up or down, and the others will move with it. Opening and closing your louvered shutters give you total control over privacy and natural light in your home.

Do you have French doors or a sliding glass door? Not every window treatment works on doors with windows. Hanging window coverings like window blinds and shades can get in the way of door handles, and they swing and slap against the door when you use it, letting in light and causing annoyance. And cords can catch in the door.

Plantation shutters solve these problems. Sunburst designs your custom plantation shutters to have a cutout for your handles, so the interior shutters won’t interfere with the handle or vice versa. They attach securely to your door and won’t swing. You also don’t have to worry about cords getting caught in the door. Durable plantation shutters won’t wear out from lots of bumps as kids and pets go in and out either.

Interior louvered window shutters do an exceptional job of stopping drafts and UV rays that come through your windows and alter your home’s temperature. Their solid materials are impenetrable to hot UV rays and cold drafts, and their parts close tightly to keep outside air out.

Sunburst’s Polywood plantation shutters are the most energy-efficient. Their solid construction and patented weatherstripping dramatically reduces temperature transfer from windows and insulates your windows up to 70% better than wood interior shutters and even more so than window blinds or shades. Furthermore, independent tests show that Polywood plantation shutters can block up to 30° and have a 45.96% reduction in heat transfer. This outstanding energy efficiency translates into a more comfortable interior home temperature and lower utility bills.

Our plantation shutters make cleaning a breeze! Both hardwood and faux-wood interior plantation shutters require just a quick dusting most of the time. For tougher grime, spot-clean wood interior shutters with a slightly damp cloth and follow with a dry cloth. Moisture-resistant faux-wood interior shutters can withstand a little more scrubbing. That’s why we recommend our best-selling Polywood plantation shutters for kitchens, bathrooms, and children’s rooms.

The interior shutter-building process begins when our custom plantation shutter experts measure your window. Then, our state-of-the-art factory equipment will custom-make plantation shutters to your window’s precise measurements. Factory technicians take each piece and hand-craft each panel to make sure that louvers tilt effortlessly and that specialty items, like rear-mounted tilt rods and arched frames, will last a lifetime. Finally, our installers will fit the treatment over your window, and you're ready to enjoy your new plantation shutters. Everything on our plantation shutters is sourced and manufactured from the USA.

Window treatments are products designed to fit in or around your window that can provide shade and light control, offer privacy, reduce temperature, and more. They include plantation shutters, shades, or blinds and cover your windows vertically or horizontally.
Our plantation shutters are always in style. Customize them to give your home a modern or classic feel. Choose Ovation Wood Shutters for solid hardwood or Polywood Shutters for gorgeous, versatile window treatments. Many of our shades, such as Roller Shades or Transitional Zebra Shades, are also sleek and stylish options that offer incredible visual appeal.
Choosing the right window treatment can be difficult. Blinds, shades, plantation shutters — plenty of options are available. When choosing, consider the following:
 • your room's decor
 • how much control you want over the ability to filter light
 • privacy concerns
 • and energy efficiency.
Fortunately, you don't have to go it alone when deciding. Our experts can help you decide the best window treatments for your home during our free design consultation.

Both add charm and extra functionality to your living space. But there are some key differences between blinds and shades.

 • Operation: Blinds have slats that can be tilted open or closed to control light. Shades typically roll up or down in one piece.
 • Materials: Blinds are typically made of harder materials like wood, faux-wood, metal or plastic. Shades are made of softer materials like sheer fabric or woven materials.
 • Light Control: Blinds offer more precise, "on-demand" light control. Need more or less light? Tilt-adjust the slats. Shades come in various opacity levels, from light-filtering to blackout, but they don't offer the same level of adjustability.
 • Privacy: Both blinds and shades can provide privacy, but blinds can be adjusted to allow some visibility while still offering privacy.
 • View: When blinds are open, you can still see out the window through the gaps between the slats. With shades, you typically won't have a view unless the shade is completely rolled up.
 • Style: Blinds tend to have a more traditional look, depending on the material. But shades come in a wider variety of styles, including roller shades, roman shades, cellular shades and even motorized shades.
Window shades costs can vary greatly in price. There are more affordable options, such as traditional roller shades, or more expensive, high-style options, like our transitional zebra shades. The types of fabrics and other materials chosen, as well as motorization options, can add to the overall cost. Our Sunburst Shutters store offers a free in-home consultation to get an accurate quote on the shades and options you want.
Cleaning window shades can be cumbersome, depending on the style of shade chosen. For traditional types of shades, wiping with a dry microfiber cloth or careful vacuuming can help to keep them clean. Be careful to not get them wet.
All window shades can protect your home from the elements to some degree, but the amount of protection varies greatly depending on the style chosen. For the best energy efficiency and strongest ability to withstand heat, cellular shades, also known as honeycomb shades, are the best bet.
Roller shades tend to be the most popular style of shades due to their many options for opacities, fabrics, and solid splashes of color. Plus, roller shades can be easier to clean than other types of window shades and tend to be the more affordable window coverings. The next most popular would be cellular or "cell" shades.
Any shade with a room-darkening option will do a great job of keeping the sun out. When choosing your style of window shades, consider more solid materials with less opacity.
Motorization adds motors and remotes to your window treatment project. The cost can range from $350 - $500 and up per window, depending on which options you choose.
Our motorized shades can be hard-wired into your home, but typically, most homeowners opt for battery-powered motorized lift systems. During our free design consultation, ask our experts about what options are available for motorized lift systems.
Motorized shades can be operated in multiple ways. At Sunburst Shutters & Window Fashions, we offer remote-controlled options, as well as the ability to connect your motorized shades to a smart home device for hands-free control. Homeowners can also program their shades to open and close at designated times of day.
Smart shades have an added smart home connectivity feature that traditional motorized shades do not include. At Sunburst Shutters, we offer motorized window shades that operate remotely as well as connect to smart home devices.
Absolutely! We offer custom motorized lift systems for top-down / bottom-up window shades at Sunburst Shutters. Just ask your local store representative for details.
Motorized shades can't be operated manually. Instead, it's advisable to contact your local Sunburst Shutters store for support for your motorized shades.
Cellular shades, also known as honeycomb shades, are a stylish and versatile window treatment that offer great energy efficiency and unique customization options. When cellular shades are closed, the gap between the pieces of fabric has a honeycomb-like shape, which is why they are also called honeycomb shades.
Depending on the type of fabric chosen, use a dry microfiber cloth or vacuum to delicately clean your cellular shades. For vacuums, a brush attachment is advised for safest cleaning.
Most cellular shades tend to last between 5 and 10 years. If properly installed and taken care of, homeowners can expect maximum life expectancy from their cellular shades.
Compared to other types of window shades, cellular shades are the most energy-efficient option available. Cellular shades can block heat from entering, as well as reduce heat loss during colder or winter months.
Compared to other window shades or blinds, cellular shades are one of the more energy-efficient window treatment options available. With proper installation and care, they can reduce heat loss and protect your home from damaging solar rays.
Yes, cellular shades are a great window treatment investment. Not only are they versatile and stylish, but because the accordion shape of cellular shades creates air pockets, this makes them more energy-efficient than other window shades or blinds. As a result, cellular shades can help save on energy costs during summer or winter months while giving your home a look you've always dreamed of!
For most of our window treatments, we estimate a lead time of 6-8 weeks. This can vary based on products, types of materials, customization options, and other factors. High-quality, American-made products like ours take a little extra time, but the benefits gained from our in-house Sunburst Shutters San Diego products are well worth the wait. We guarantee it.
At Sunburst Shutters San Diego, all custom window treatments are installed by our employees. We do not use subcontractors, so we can ensure that our customers receive only the best customer service from start to finish!
Different window treatments have different warranties. For Polywood® Shutters, our most popular treatment, we offer a lifetime warranty against defects in the materials, workmanship, paint, and installation, including warping, cracking, chipping, fading, and discoloration to the original buyer.
